  • India's average per capita availability of water resources is 2,200 cubic meters.
  • Tamil Nadu is one of the water starved States, where the per capita availability of water resources is 900 cubic meters per year.
  • The annual average rainfall of Tamilnadu is around 921.50 mm (48% during north-east monsoon, 35% during south-west monsoon, 14% during summer and 3% during winter)
  • Tamilnadu received Krishi Karman award from Government of India for its best performance in food grain production during 2011-12.

Agro Climatic Zones in Tamilnadu

Tamil Nadu State has been classified into seven distinct agro-climatic zones based on rainfall distribution, irrigation pattern, soil characteristics, cropping pattern and other physical, ecological and social characteristics
including administrative divisions.


North Eastern  Agro Climatic Zone

Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Vellore, Villupuram and
Tiruvannamalai

North  Western  Agro Climatic Zone


Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem and Namakkal (Part)

Western Agro Climatic Zone

Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Karur (Part), Namakkal (Part),
Dindigul, Perambalur and Ariyalur (Part)

Cauvery Delta Agro Climatic Zone

Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Trichy and
parts of - Karur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai
and Cuddalore

Southern Agro Climatic Zone

Madurai, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar,
Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi
   
High Rainfall Agro Climatic Zone

Kanyakumari

Hilly Agro Climatic Zone
The Nilgiris and Kodaikanal (Dindigul)
